Vegan Skincare for Veganuary

It's a cliché: January 1st comes around and you're 100% ready to embody that "new year, new you" feeling with your New Year's resolutions. Then, by the time February arrives, "old you" has returned and you're back where you started with those habits you planned to break.

The key to a successful New Year's resolution is making it both worth the bother and achievable. Making grand plans can set you up for failure and having a go then either failing or giving up can feel worse than not trying in the first place.

So, here's an idea - when it comes to resolutions, instead of thinking about things you need or think you need to change in an effort to make yourself "better", focus on resolving to do more of the things that make you feel good.

What is Veganuary?

Cue Veganuary. This is an idea that promotes veganism by encouraging people to follow a vegan lifestyle for the month of January. In general, vegans follow a diet free of meat and animal by-products such as milk or cheese. As a vegan, you also tend to have more plant proteins, beans and pulses and more fruit and vegetables. Vegan devotees say following a vegan diet, even for such a short spell can bring benefits and can provide the nutrition people need in concord with health benefits - an attractive proposition when people look to make up for festive excesses.

What is Vegan Skincare?

It's easy to get your head around a vegan diet, but the concept of vegan skincare can be a bit confusing. By definition, vegan skincare products (such as Oleo) are not produced from an animal or any animal by-product. This means that traditional ingredients like beeswax, honey, collagen and lanolin are not used.

At Oleo, in place of beeswax, we use rice bran wax which is a skin conditioning agent. As most collagen is the by-product of the slaughterhouse, we use a pseudo collagen which is extracted from the intracellular matrix of yeast cells and is very effective as a collagen replacement by providing greater elasticity and resilience to the skin.

The Benefits of Vegan Skincare

Another benefit of vegan skincare formulas is that the ingredients taken from plants often bring more vitamin goodness. In addition to this, you'll also be nourishing your skin with antioxidants, minerals and natural oils to help in repairing and maintaining soft skin.

Vegan products tout the same general benefits of a vegan diet in terms of reducing environmental damage and promoting kindness towards animals. Vegan ingredients such as aloe vera, cocoa butter and essential oils have been used for centuries for their healing and cosmetic properties.

So this January, will you be taking on Veganuary diet and skincare? We'd love to know if you do decide to give it a shot.
