Thai Foot Massage

Traditional Thai Foot Massage is an ancient form of therapeutic healing. Its roots are in India from where it was brought to Thailand over 2000 years ago by Ayurvedic doctors and Buddhist monks. It combines acupressure, energy balancing and stretching. Whereas most traditional western and eastern massage practices focus on tissue manipulation and the working of the muscles and joints, Thai massage barely touches on either of these. It is more a manipulation of the pressure points, energy lines and basic body forces which together produce a highly therapeutic effect.

How Does It Work?

Using thumbs, hands and a wooden acupressure tool, massage is applied to the lower legs and feet using rubbing, kneading, stretching and vibration techniques. (There is no need to undress, as long as the lower legs and feet are exposed).

Pressure points are thought to be areas along “energy lines” which some consider as metaphor and others take to be real. Energy lines in Thailand are called ‘Sen lines’. These correspond to the Meridians of Chinese medicine.

By focusing on the main Sen Lines, I work on reflex/pressure points on the feet which correspond to various internal organs, through which life energy, prana, Chi or Ki flows. It is believed that blockages within the flow will result in pain, illness or disease. By working along these lines with pressure, and by stretching the lines, blocked energy can be released and functions balanced.
